Benefits of Ramadan

Benefits of Ramadan comes with lots of blessings in the month of Ramadan. ALLAH has blessed this month specially out of 11 months. Ramadan is a month of fasting. The Holy Quran was revealed in this month (PBUH). In this article, you will learn surprising benefits of Ramadan.

 The prophet Mohammad said,

“when the month of Ramadan starts, the gates of heaven are opened and gates of hell are closed and devils are chained” (Sahih Bukhari 1800)

This month is considered as a sacred & blessed time of year for Muslims. We can find many spiritual & physical benefits by fasting in this month.

Spiritual benefits of fasting

 ALLAH says in Quran,

“O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous” (Surah al-Baqarah#183)

From the above ayah, it shows that the purpose of fasting is the attainment of “Taqwa” (to become righteous). The two main characteristics are developed in this month for consciousness of ALLAH.

Avoiding Sins:

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Whoever does not give up forged speech and evil actions, ALLAH is not in need of his leaving his food and drink (i.e. ALLAH will not accept his fasting.)”

(Sahih al-Bukhari 1903)

Fasting is not just only giving up eating, drinking, and sexual desires. But it is also giving up evil actions & false speech.

We are often addicted to many bad habits. Such as lying, backbiting, smoking, swearing, and listening to music. But while fasting, we try to be honest, truthful, and pious to avoid these sins. During Ramadan, fasting develops the ability of self-restrained and patience. So we realize that forgoing our addiction(s) might not be as hard as we think to prevent.

To become more virtuous and pious:

In our busy lives, we often think that performing daily worship is difficult. Because Satan is constantly tempting us to keep us away from ALLAH’s path. But in Ramadan, along with obligatory prayer, we start offering nafil prayer (tarweeh) and reciting Quran more than usual. We also give extra charity.
